Ironically for a film about family dysfunction, Julia Dyer’s The Playroom is truly a family affair, being that it was written by Julia’s sister Gretchen and co-produced by brother Stephen. The Dyer trio previously united for 1996’s Late Bloomers, which received a bright reception at the Sundance Film Festival before garnering an underwhelming response upon its minimal U.S. release. It has taken 17 years for them to collaborate again—and Gretchen’s death in 2009 sadly ensures that this will be their final project together. While the gay-themed Late Bloomers chronicled cultural and sexual enlightenment between established professionals, the characters in The Playroom aren’t so open.
